Pet Friendly Places
Here in the Scottish Highlands, you don’t have to leave your pet at home when you go on holiday. There are a number of pet-friendly options for travelers. Many people love walking their dogs, and enjoying the breath-taking scenery of the Scottish Highlands can be even more memorable when one’s canine companion is along. Pet-friendly accommodations come in the same wide variety as all the rest in the Scottish Highlands—you can easily find the type of accommodation you desire which will also welcome your four-footed friend, such as hotels, bed and breakfasts, campsites and caravan parks, pub accommodation, and self-catering cottages, chalets, and houses. Most accommodations will indicate that they are pet-friendly with a sign or notice in their brochure stating “pets welcome.” Many pets enjoy travelling as much as their owners, so accommodation owners are quite used to answering queries about their pet policies. After all, almost 25% of UK residents own at least one dog, so travelling with pets has become more and more the norm.
So, with a bit of planning, and the willingness to pay slightly more for your furry friend’s accommodation, you should be able to find a lovely accommodation where you and your pet can relax and enjoy the beauty of the Scottish Highlands. Remember to bring your pet’s basic necessities along with you, as the accommodation generally will not provide food and water bowls, leashes, toys, carriers, etc. When you are searching for a pet-friendly accommodation, keep these things in mind: most accommodations will require your pet be kept on a leash when in public areas; some will require health and vaccination documentation; others will have a limit as to size and weight of the pets allowed; and some will not allow you to leave your pet unattended in the room while you are out exploring. You can imagine how a strange environment could lead Rover to wreak havoc all alone in his room!
The term pet-friendly generally applies to dogs and oftentimes cats, so if you are considering travelling with another kind of pet, please check with individual accommodations and restaurants before assuming your pet will be welcome. Also, most accommodation will have very specific guidelines or restrictions about their expectations for their pet guests, so please familiarize yourself with these before heading off on your holiday. A deposit for Fido may be required as well.
The Scottish Highlands are a wonderful, diverse place well-suited to travelling with pets. There are myriad locations for walking your dog, hiking, and visiting historic sites. All it takes is a wee bit of planning, conscientious communication with the accommodation owner, and the willingness of the pet owner to be respectful and courteous, and you can have a fabulous holiday with your best four-footed friend. So, take a browse through the many accommodations available and get started planning your special Scottish Highlands pet-friendly holiday now!
