The Scottish Highlands are beautiful and remote—a wonderful place to get away from it all. However, in this day and age, sometimes it’s not possible to leave everything behind when you travel or go on holiday. If your situation requires you to stay in touch, don’t worry about the remoteness of the Scottish Highlands. Many accommodations now have free Wi-Fi access, or Wi-Fi access for a small fee. While doing all we can to maintain the historical and natural character of the Highlands, we realise that folks need to be able to stay in touch. Your holiday in the Highlands does not need to be fraught with worry, wondering how you will keep up with the demands back home. You can book into an accommodation with Wi-Fi and rest easy.
Wi-Fi is actually a trademark of the Wireless Fidelity Alliance, an international association of companies involved with wireless LAN technologies and products. It is an industry term representing a type of wireless area network protocol based on the 802.11 IEEE network standard. A wireless network uses radio waves to transmit data. What this means for you is that you can expect to connect to broadband Internet at a decent rate of speed. Whatever your reason for needing to stay connected to the Internet, many accommodations in the Scottish Highlands now offer Wi-Fi. Sometimes, it is imperative for business that you have this access. Other times, it’s just a great option for those travelling far from home. For instance, you may wish to download your digital photos for the day and email them to your friends and family. As well, having Wi-Fi access means that you can search for information and activities in the area in which you are staying, and even book online if you find something you’d like to pursue. Wi-Fi really is a super tool for today’s traveler, and many hotels, bed and breakfasts, guesthouses, and self-catering accommodations are recognizing that.
If you desire Wi-Fi in your Scottish Highlands accommodation, just be sure to ask when booking. It is also a good idea to find out if the accommodation charges any fees for this amenity. Often, if an accommodation lists Wi-Fi as “available,” it means you can indeed access it, but you will have to pay for it. Another option if you wish to stay connected is to find out if your accommodation has a guest computer in one of its public rooms. This may not suffice if you need Internet for business purposes, but could be the perfect solution if you merely want to the option to stay in touch with friends and family while on holiday.
